How do our brains create the experiences of pleasure, happiness, and well-being? For most of the past century, the scientific study of psychology including emotion, cognition, and behavior has neglected these questions. Instead, psychology has tended to focus on understanding the more negative aspects of human functioning, such as fear, anxiety, depression, deviant behaviors, and other types of psychopathology. Positive psychology is the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive. This course offers a scientific and practical exploration of human strengths by critically examining the contributions of the science of positive psychology, with its implications for physical health and well-being.
